Training and development is an integral part of the human resource functions in any organization. It is a continuous process which updates the knowledge and widens the skills of employees, one of the most important resource in any organization. Training and development is designed to cater the changing environment with various programme and methods planned by professionals. This helps to extract the maximum efficiency and productivity from the available human resource. Training is a formal and systematic modification of behavior through learning which occurs as a result of. Also training is a formal and methodical adjustment of behavior through learning which is a result of education, instruction, development, and planned experience.(Armstrong, 2003 as cited by Mensah and Darkwa, 2016)
What is training and development?
Although the term training and development is used as one and same, training and development have some differences. Training is the improving and enhancing the abilities and skills of an employee for some specific task or tasks. It is expected to make him perfect in the given field. Training is actually a job focused one.
Development covers more area than job focused spheres, it broaden to the areas of increasing soft skills, and psychological improvement. Actually development referred to the overall improvement in personality.
The process of training and development
In the competitive market, it is vital to upgrade the human resource to meet future needs. Training and development should be a continuous process since it is needed to update the skills and knowledge arise with the changing needs and time. Essential segments of a worthy employee training programme are built on orientation, management skills and operational skills of employees.(Kleiman, 2000 as cited by Jehanzeb and Bashir, 2013)
1. Understanding the necessity of training and development for employees.
Initially a necessity of training and development should be understood with the goals and objectives of the business. Sometimes when a company introduces a new department or tries to improve the performance of an available team of employees training and development is needed.
2. Determine specific goals and targets which is necessary to be achieved.
There are specifics aims or targeted improvement of skills and knowledge. Training and development is planned to achieve those objectives.
3. Selecting the method and style of training and development.
Most of the time HR team decides the method of conducting the training. The training may be a technical training, soft skill development, professional training, etc.
4. Implementing the programme of training and development.
Implementing the necessary training and development process to the target category to achieve planned objectives is important.
5. Evaluation of the outcome after conducting the programme.
Evaluation of the success of the programme can be done by getting feedback from the instructor and also from the participants. This is helpful in planning and implementation of future training and development programme.
6. Monitoring the performance
Continuous monitoring regarding the performance after the training programme is needed when planning future programmes and to identify the need to conduct training programmes again.
