Employee engagement

 



Employee engagement is a significant driver of business success in contemporary competitive marketplace. Higher employee engagement contributes for reducing employee turnover, retention of talent, achieving productivity, achieve customer loyalty, and enhance the performance and company’s profitability etc. Employees with higher level of engagement, contribute more to the productivity of the organization and they work hard, retain and encourage others to do so.

What is employee engagement?

Strength of emotional and mental harmony employees feel towards the work they do, their teams, and their organization is regarded as the employee engagement. (Ryba, 2021) Considering how employees feel regarding their company or organization, employees are divided into four categories

· Highly engaged employees

· Moderately engaged employees

· Barely engaged employees

· Disengaged employees



Interpretation of employee engagement as employee satisfaction is not accurate at all. They are different concepts. Happiness and satisfaction is not always same as employee engagement. An employee who is satisfied with the work may not be engaged. Satisfaction is not something about the way employees are invested in the company or their contribution to the organization. Employees who are engaged contribute more to the productivity of the organization.

· Optimistic

· Team oriented

· Goes beyond the basic requirements

· Solution oriented

· Express a passion for learning

Advantages of employee engagement.

Reduce employee turnover and increase employee retention

When employees are highly engaged they seek career development and go beyond the basic requirements. They have a clear understanding about the organizational culture and they will be recognized.

Increase satisfaction of the customer

When employees always try do something beyond the basic requirements, and because of the productivity and performance customers are satisfied and  attracted to such organizations.

Reduce the absenteeism

Frequent absenteeism is a critical issue an organization face. When employees are dedicated to the company’s mission and culture their presence is high. They contribute their talent and time for the performance, productivity and also for their career development.

Team work

Employ engagement is beneficial not only for the individual but also for the whole team. When employees are engaged as a team their productivity and efficiency is high. And also highly engaged employees encouraged others to do so.

Increase productivity, profitability and performance

Employees who are highly engaged work more efficiently and enhance the productivity as their performance is important to them. They are invested in the work they do.

Reduce stress in the workplace

It is found that engaged employees are more capable of handling work stress and they become motivators to do so.

Increase employee loyalty

When employees are engaged they are dedicated to the work they do, they are stick to the work. They are less likely to make mistakes and they are loyal to the organization. (Wickham, 2020)

How to develop and sustain employee engagement by HR and management

Work place culture, communication, managerial styles, and leadership are examples for the factors which influence employee engagement. HR team and managers can contribute more to sustainability and development of employee engagement in the organization.

· Providing employees necessary tools and environment to achieve the goals.

· Distributing authority for managers in an appropriate manner.

· Increasing leadership development projects.

· Make sound investments and strategies to increase engagement levels.

· Employee engagement surveys.

· Building an engagement culture.

· Training and development.

· Performance management.

· Strategic compensation.

It should be remembered that the factors which drive employee engagement varies from country to country and industry to industry. But employee engagement is a critical measure of high performing teams.(DeBara, D and St-Aubin, 2021)

Conclusion

Employee engagement effectively contributes for reducing employee turnover, increase employee retention, achieving productivity, and enhance the performance of the organization. Employee engagement as employee satisfaction are two different concepts and  employee who is satisfied with the work may not be engaged. HR managers has to play a vital role creating organizational culture in order to produce an engaged employee.
